If you don’t already know, President Mugabe has reshuffled his cabinet and with it came a flurry of surprises including the announcement of a totally new Ministry of Cyber Security, Threat Detection and Mitigation, headed by none other than the now former Minister of Finance, Hon Patrick Chinamasa.
In an equal world Hon Chinamasa’s appointed to this new ministry is standard procedure really, governments across the globe are starting to get serious about cyber security, and they should, however this is Zimbabwe and standard procedure doesn’t work here plus the government recently warned Zimbabweans that it is monitoring social media, so you can understand why the nation is jittery at the moment.
What is also clear is that the Cyber Crime and Security Bill which was being spearheaded by The Ministry of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Supa Mandiwanzira will now be in the hands of Chinamasa, a lawyer by the way.
There no doubt that this bill will be law before the elections under Chinamasa’s stewardship, what is still a gray area is his understanding of the technical aspects of fighting cyber crime, with the amount of time left for the nation to hold fresh elections in 2018.
So should we be worried, honestly I don’t know, what do you think?
